Tip 51. Avoid ointments and salves for conjunctivitis.
The treatment of conju
n
ctivitis thro
u
gh salves
a
nd ointments does not cure the dis
e
ase. To be effective, treatment must
be constitu
t
ional. A tho
r
ough cleansing of the system and adoption of natural laws in diet and
general livi
n
g alone can
help elimin
a
te conjunc
t
ivitis.
The best way to comm
e
nce the trea
t
ment is to adopt an exclusive fresh
f
ruit diet for
a
bout
seven days. The diet may consist of
f
resh juicy f
r
uits in seas
o
n such as
a
pple, orang
e
, pears, grapes, pin
e
apple and g
r
apefruit. Banana shoul
d
, however,
n
ot be taken.
No other foodstuff should be
a
dded to this
diet.
Those who have a serious trouble should under
t
ake a juice
f
ast for three or four days. The procedure is to take the juice of an o
r
ange, in a glass of warm water, if desired, every two
hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nothing else shou
l
d
be taken as
otherwise t
h
e value of the fast will be lost.
If orange juice disagre
e
s, carrot j
u
ice may be t
a
ken. A warm water enema should be
taken daily during the period of
fasting.
The short juice fast may be followed
by an all-fruit diet for fur
t
her seven days. Thereafter, the patient may
adopt a ge
n
eral diet sc
h
eme on the following lin
e
s
:
* Breakfast: Any fresh fruits in seas
o
n, except bananas.
* Lunch: Large mixed r
a
w vegetable salad with
whole meat bread or c
h
apattis and
butter.
* Dinner: Two or three s
t
eamed veg
e
tables, other
than potat
o
es, with nuts and fresh f
r
uit.
The patient
should avoid an excessive intake of starchy and sugary foods in the form of white bread, refi
n
ed cereals,
potatoes, p
u
ddings, pi
es
, pastry, sugar, jams and confection
e
ry, which cause the
g
eneral cata
r
rhal conditi
o
n as well as
conjunctivitis. He should
also avoid
t
he intake
of excessive quantities
o
f meat and other protein
and fatty foods, strong t
e
a and coffe
e
, too much salt, condiments and sauces.
Tip 52. Avoid overeating.
Avoid over
e
ating. A fu
n
damental teaching of
Ayurveda is that the common cause of
all diseases is
t
he accumulation of waste and pois
o
nous matter in the body which resul
t
s from overeating. Every disease can be
h
ealed by only one reme
d
y - by doing
just the op
p
osite of what causes it, that is,
b
y reducing the food int
a
ke or fastin
g
. The majority of persons eat too much and follow sedent
a
ry occupati
o
ns which do
not permit sufficient and proper exercise for utilisa
t
ion of
this large q
u
antity of food. This sur
pl
us overburdens the dig
e
stive and assimilative organs and
clogs up the system with impurities
o
r poisons. Digestion and
elimination
become slow and t
h
e functional
activity of the whole system gets deranged.
The onset of
disease
is
merely the
p
rocess of
r
i
d
ding the system of these impurities.
By depriving the body of food for a time, the organs
of eliminati
o
n such as t
h
e bowels, kidneys,
skin and
lu
n
gs are given opportunity to expel, unhampered, the overload of accumul
a
ted waste from the system. Thus, fasting is merely the process of puri
f
ication and
a
n effective and quick method of cure.
