misery by d oing something. They should turn away from th e mselves and consider o thers. At home they c an take to d ecorating, r e pairing or c o nstructing something new. The pleasure of achieveme n t overcomes the distress of depression.

Tip 41. Exercise also pl a y s an im p ortant role in the treatment of depression.

It not only keeps the b o dy physically and ment a lly fit but also provides recreation a n d mental relaxation. It is nature' b est tranquilliser. According to Dr. Robert Brown, a clinical associate professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine," Exercise prod u ces chemic a l and psychological changes t hat improv e s your men t al health. It changes the levels of h o rmones in blood and may elevate your beta-endorphins(mood- a ffecting brain chemicals). Exercise may also improve the functi o n of the aut o nomic nerv o us system."

Tip 42. Treat dandruff from the inside, not the outside.

Numerous medicated shampoos are available in the market for the trea t ment of dandruff. Most

of these, h o wever, in the process of curing the d isorder, ca u s e irreparable damage to the hair roots beca u se of the s y nthetic ingr e dients cont a ined in them. The treatment of dand r uff has to

be constitu ti onal, if a pe r manent cure is desire d .

The foremost consider a tion in the t r eatment of this disorder is to keep t h e hair and scalp clean

so as to mi n imise the accumulation of dead cells. The hair should be br u s hed daily t o improve the circul a tion and remove any flakiness. The most effective way to brush the hair is to bend

forward from the waist with the head down towards the gr o und, and brush from the nape of the

neck towar d s the top of t he head. Short or shoul d er-length hair can be br u s hed right f r om the roots to the ends in one stroke. In t h e case of l o ng hair, two strokes would be best to avoid stretching t h e hair.

Tip 43. Acid = Danger

Acid works danger, but base works health. Here are the miracles of the alkalising diet.

The human body is composed of various organs and parts, which are made up of tissues and cells. Th e se tissues and cells are c o mposed of 16 chemical elements.

The balance or equilibri u m of these chemical el em ents in the body is an essential factor in the maintenance of health a nd healing o f disease. T he acid-alk a line balance plays a vital role in

this bala n c e d body chemistry. All foods, after d i gestion and absorption leave either an acid or alkaline a s h in the body depending o n their mineral composition. The normal body chemistry is approximat e ly 20 per cent acid and 80 per cent alkaline. T his is the a c i d -alkaline b a lance.

In normal health, the re a ction of the blood is alk a line and that is ess e ntial for our physical and mental well-being. The p reponderance of alk a lis in the blood is due to the fact that the products

of the vital combustions taking pl a c e in the body are mostly acid in c h ar a c ter. Carbohydrates and fats fo r m about nine-tenths of t he normal fuel of the bo d y. IN normal health, this great mass of material is converted into c a rbon dioxide gas and water. Half of the remaining one- tenth fuel is also conver t ed into the same gas and water. This huge amount of acid is transported by the blood to the various points of discharge, mainly the lungs. By vir t ue of

alkali n ity, the blood is a ble to trans p ort the a c id f rom the tissues to the discharge points.

Thus, our d aily diet sh o uld consist o f four-fifth of alkaline-fo rm ing foods such as juicy fruits, tubers, leg u mes, ripe fruits, leafy a n d root vegetables and o ne fifty of acid-forming foods containing concentrated proteins and starches s u ch as meat, fish, bread a nd cereals. Eating sensibly in t his manner will ensure t he necessa r y alkalinity of the food which will ke e p the body

in perfect h e alth.
