The essential fatty acids which red u ce serum c h olesterol le v els and minimise the risk of arterioscler o s is can be o btained from sunflower seed oil, corn oil or saf f l o wer oil. Several studies have indica t ed that garlic can reduce the chole s terol level in persons w h ose body normally cannot regulate the cholesterol frac ti ons. Other important cholesterol lo w ering foods are alfalfa and yoghurt. Lecithin h e lps prevent fatty deposits in arteries. Best food sources are u nrefined, raw, crude vegetable oils, seeds a n d grains.

 

Fruits and vegetables in general are highly beneficial in the t reatment of heart disease. Seasonal f r uits are qui t e effective heart tonics. Apples esp e cially contain heart stimulating properties a nd the pati e nts suffering from the w e akness of h eart should make liberal use of

apples and apple jams. Fresh grap e s, pineappl e s, oranges, custard apples, pomegranates and coconut wa t er also tone up the hear t . Grapes are effective in heart pain a nd palpitati o n of the heart and t h e disease can be rapidly controlled if the patient adopts an ex clusive grapes diet

for few days. Grape juice, especi a lly will be valuable when one is actu a l l y suffering from a heart attack.

 

Indian gooseberry or amla is considered an ef f ective home remedy for heart disease. It tones up the functions of all t h e organs of t he body and builds up h ealth by destroying the heterogeneous elements and renewing lost ene r gy.

 

 

 

Tip 38. To p revent baldness, eat the right foods.

 

Persons with a tendency to lose hair should th u s take a well balanced a nd correct diet, made

up of foods which in c o mbination should supply all the essential nutri e nts. It has b een found that a diet which cont a i n s liberal qu a ntities of


 

(i) seeds, n u ts and grai n s,

(ii) vegetables and

(iii) frui t s

 

would provide adequate amounts of all the ess e ntial nutrien t s.

 

Each food g roup should roughly form the bulk of one of the t h ree principal meals. These foods should, ho w ever, be supplemented with certain s pecial f oo d s such a s milk, vegetable oils,

honey, wh e at germ, ye as t and liver.

 

 

 

Tip 39. To c ure a headache, eat something (as long as it is not sugar).

 

Low blood sugar is one of the caus e s of irritabili t y and headache. Sugar is not a cure for low blood sugar, though it may raise the blood sugar temporarily and make one feel bett e r for a while.

 

Low blood sugar is the r esult of an a bused panc r eas which ov er stimulates the prod u ction

of insulin in t he body. It can be contr o lled by eati n g smaller meals at short intervals ra t her than the standard three large meals daily. The intake o f carbohydrates should b e cut down to the minim u m. Coffee should be elimina t ed as it over stimulates t he pancreas.
