To protect t he body from the effects of a high- f at diet, take lecithin.


In normal health, when a diet high in fat is take n , there is tremendous inc r ease in the

production o f lecithi n . T h is helps in changing the fat in the bl o od from large particles t o smaller and smaller ones. In case of atherosclerosis, h o wever, the lecithin in t h e blood remains very

low regardless of the q u antity of fat entering the blood.

 

The result is that, the fat particles r e main too large to be able to pass th r ough the ar t erial walls.

A more serious situa t i o n can develop if there is lack of leci t hin in cells a lso.

 

 

 

Tip 228. Ho l y Basil for Unho l y Stress

 

The leaves of holy basil, known as t ulsi in t h e vernacular, a r e highly beneficially the treatment

of stress. T h ey are regarded as ada p togen or anti-stress age n ts. Recent s t udies have shown that the leaves protect a gainst str e ss signi f icantly. It has been suggested that even healthy persons sh o uld chew 12 leaves of holy basil twice a day, morning and ev ening for preventing stress.

 

The leaves of the holy basil ( tulsi) h ave also been found b e neficial in t h e treatment of this condition. T he water boiled with basil leaves sh o uld be taken as a drink a nd also us e d as a gargle in so r e throat.

 

 

 

Tip 229. Castor Oil for D y sent e ric Disorders

 

The often-forgotten but always effective reme d y for dysentery is castor oil.

 

The patient may be giv e n small doses of castor oil in the fo r m of emulsion. This ac t s as a mild aperient and facilita t es q uicker removal of offensive matter, minimises the strain dur i ng motion and also ac t s as a lub r icant to the ulcerated sur f aces. In ad d ition to administration of castor oil, the mechanical removal of accumul a ted poison o us matter should be att e mpted by g i ving very

low pressu r e enema, admitting as much water as the patient can tolerat e . This can b e done

twice or thrice daily. T h e patient s h ould take c o mplete bed rest as movement induces pain and aggravates distressing sympt o m s. A hot water bag may be a p plied over the abdomen.

 

After the acute sympt o ms are over, the patient may be allowed rice, c u rd, fresh ri p e fruits, especially bael, banana and pomegranate and skimmed milk. Solid foods should be introduced very carefully and gradually accordi n g to the pace of recovery. Flesh foods of all kin d s should

be avoided in future as f ar as possi b le. Other foods which s h ould be avoided are tea, coffee,

white sugar and white flour and products made from them a s well as alcohol in all f o rms. Foods which have a detoxifying and clea n sing effect u pon the int e stines on t h eir passage, through,

such as fr u i t s and vegetables, are most essen t ial to the futu r e diet.

 

 

 

Tip 230. Turmeric for Bronchitis

 

One of the most effective reme d y f or bronchitis is the use o f turmeric powder. A teaspoonful of this powder should be a dministered with a glass of milk two or three times daily. It acts best

when taken on an empty stomach.

 

Another effective reme d y for bronchitis is a mixture of dried ginger powder, pepper and long pepper tak e n in equal q uantities th r ee times a day. It m a y b e licked with honey or infused with one's daily t ea. The powder of these three ingredients have antipyretic q u alities and a re

effective in dealing with fever accompanied by bronchitis. T h ey also tone up the metabolism of the patient.
