Tip 225. A Novel Diet for H y pog l y caemia

 

The high animal protein diet generally prescribed for hypoglycaemia is n ot suitable f or this disorder. It may help control the co n dition temporarily, but it is harmful in many other respects and may re s ult in other d iseases like heart trouble, arteries, kidney problems and cancer.

The ideal diet for hypoglycaemia should be based on three basic food g roups, namely grains, seeds and n uts, vegetable oils. See d s, nuts and grains should be the main constitue n ts of the diet. Seeds and nuts s h ould be tak e n in their r a w form. Gra i ns, in the fo r m of cereals, should

be cooked. Cooked grains are digested slowly and r e lease sugar into the blood grad u ally six to


eight hours after meals. This will ke e p the blood sugar level normal and constant for a long period.

 

Persons suf f ering from low blood su g ar should t a ke six to ei g ht small meals a day instead of twoor three large ones. Eating raw nuts and se e ds such a s pumpkin or sunflower seeds or drinking milk, butter milk or fruit juic e s be t ween meals will b e highly beneficial. A l l r e fined and

processed f oods, white sugar, white flour and t h eir by-products sho u ld b e completely eliminated from the diet.

 

Coffee, alc o hol and soft drinks sh o uld also be avoided. The consumption of salt sho u ld be reduced as an excessive intake of salt caus e s l o ss of blood potassium, which caus e s blood sugar to dr o p. The foll o wing is the menu suggested for hypoglycaemia.

 

* On rising: Fresh fruits such as ap p les, peach e s, melons, b erries, avocado or a gl a ss of fresh fruit juice.

* Breakfast: Nuts, seeds, fruit, cotta g e cheese a n d buttermilk.

* Mid-morn i ng: Fruit, fr u it juice or t o mato juice.

* Lunch: Cooked cereals and milk.

* Mid-after n oon: A glass of fruit or vegetable juice or a snack consis t ing o f nuts.

* Dinner: Vegetable sal a d with a co o k ed vegetable from am o ng those allowed, one or two slic e s of whole wheat bread, cottage cheese and butter milk.

* On retiring: A glass of milk or butt e rmilk.

 

Vegetables which can b e taken in hy poglycaem i a are aspa r agus, beets, carrots, c u cumbers, egg-plants, peas, radis h es, tomatoes, spin a ch, kale, lettuce, beans, bak e d potatoes. Fruits which can b e taken are apples, apricots, berri es , peaches, a nd pineapples. Consumption of citrus sh o uld be limited.

 

 

 

Tip 226. Fi g s and Mango for Relief of Piles

 

The most important food remedy for piles is dry figs. Three or four figs s h ould be so a k ed overnight in water after cleansing th e m thoroughly in hot water. They should be taken the first thing in the morning along with water in which t h ey were soaked. They should also b e taken in the evening in a similar manner.

 

This treatment should be continued f or three or four weeks. The tiny seeds of the fruit possess

an excellent quality of stimulating peristaltic m o v e ments of intestines. T h is facilitates easy evacuation of faeces a n d keeps the alimentary canal clean. The pressu r e on the an u s having thus been r e lieved, the haemorrhoids also get c o ntracted.

 

 

 

Mango seeds are regar d ed as an ef f ective rem e dy for bleeding piles. T h e seeds sh o uld be collected d u ring the mango season, dried in the shade and p owdered and kept stor e d for use

as medicin e . It should b e given in doses of ab o ut one and a half gram to two grams with or without honey.
