The nephritis patient s h ould avoid vegetables containing la r ge quantiti e s of oxalic a cid such as spinach and rhubarb. Chocolate and cocoa also contain oxalic acid and must not be u s ed.

Garlic, asp a ragus, parsley, watercress, c u cumber and cele r y are excellent vegetables. The

best fruits a r e papaya and bananas. Both have a healing eff e ct on kidne y s. A small am ount of soured milk and home- made cottage cheese c a n be includ e d in the diet. All salt sh o uld be eliminated from the diet. Five or six small meals should be taken in prefe r ence to a f e w large ones.

 

A glassful of carrot juice mixed with t ablespoonf u l of honey and a teasp o onful of fresh lime juice is a very effective home reme d y for nephritis. It should b e taken every day early i n the morning before breakfast.

to maintain the blood vessels, p articularly the c a pillaries and arterial sys t em in a healthy condition. It may be tak e n as a beverage by simmering it gently in the water for a f e w minutes and partaki n g several times daily.

 

The added effects of p a rsley for the health are many. Parsley protects a g ainst allerg y , soothes the digesti o n, and even sweetens t h e breath. Parsley may a l so be eaten raw in sala d s and cooked as a vegetable, taken in moderation in a balanced diet.

 

 

 

Tip 198. Pomegranate and Mango for Diarrh o ea

 

The pomegranate has p r oved beneficial in t h e t r eatment of diarrhoea on account of i t s

astringent p r operties. If t he patient d evelops weakness due t o profuse a n d continuo u s purging,

he should b e given repeatedly about 50 ml of pomegranate juice to dri n k. This will c o ntrol the diarrhoea.

 

Mango seeds are also v aluable in di arrhoea. The seeds sh o uld be collected during t h e mango season, dri e d in the sh a de and powdered and kept stored f o r use as medicine when required.

It should be given in doses of about one and a h alf gram to two grams w i th or without honey.

 

 

Tip 199. Pumpkins Seeds for Pro s tate Problems

 

Pumpkin seeds have been found to be an effecti v e home r e medy for prostate problems and many patie n ts have been helped by their use. T h ese seeds a re rich in u n saturated fa t ty acids which are e ssential to t he health of the prostate.

 

Heavy starches, sweet stimulants a n d highly se a s oned foods are entirely forbidden, a s they


cause dir e ct irritation on the prostate gland and bladder. The diet should also exclude spices, condiments, salt in exc e ss, sa u c es, red meats, cheese, asp a ragus, watercress, gre a sy or fried foods, alco h ol, tobacco and too much tea or cof f ee. The patient should av oid hurried meals
