The cold c o mpress is a n effective means of controlling in fl ammatory c onditions of the liver, spleen, st om ach, kidn e ys, intestin e s, lungs, br a in, pelvic o r gans and so on. It is also advantageous in c a ses of fever and heart disease. The cold compress soothes irrita t ions of the

For relieving pain, use t h e hot compress.

 

This is a cold compress covered in such a manner as to bri n g warmth. A heating c o mpress consis t s of t hree or four folds of lin e n cloth wru n g out in cold water which is then co v ered completely with dry flannel or blanket to prevent the circulation of air and help accu m ulation of body heat.

 

The hot compress some t imes appli e d for several hours. The duration of t he applica t ion is determined by the exte n t and locati o n of the sur f ace involved, the nature and thickn e ss of the


coverings a nd the water temperature. After removing the compress, the area should be rubbed with a wet cloth and then dried with a towel.

 

A heating c o mpress can be applied t o the throat, chest, abd o men, and joints. A throat

compress relieves sore t hroat, hoarseness, tonsillitis, phary n gitis and la ry ngitis. An abdominal compress helps those suffering fr o m gastritis, hyperacidity, indiges t io n , jaundice, constipation, diarrhoea, dy sentery a n d other ailments relating to the abd o minal organs. The chest compress also known as chest p a ck, relieves colds, bro n chitis, pl e urisy, pneumon i a, fever, cough and so on, while t h e joints compress is h elpful for infl a med joints, r heumatism, rheumatic fever and sprains.
