The most important asp e ct of the tre a tment of epilepsy is the diet.

 

To begin wi t h, the patie n t should be placed on a n exclusive fruit diet for first few days. During this period h e should h a ve three m e als a day of fresh juicy f r uits such as oranges, a p ples,

grapes, gr a pefruit, peaches, pears, pineapple a nd melon. Thereafter, he may grad u ally adopt a well balanc e d diet of thr e e basic food groups viz. (i) seeds, n u ts and grai n s, (ii) veget a bles and

(iii) frui t s wi t h emphasis on sprouted seeds s u ch as alfalfa s e eds and mung beans, r a w vegetables and fruits. T he diet sho u ld include a moderate amount of raw milk preferably goat's milk and milk products such as raw butter and h omemade c ottage che e se.


 

The diet sh o uld elimina t e completely all animal proteins, except milk, as they not only lack in magnesium, but also rob the body of its own magnesium storage as well as of vitamin B6. Both these subs t ances are n eeded in la r ge amounts by epileptics. The best f o od sources of magnesium are raw nuts, seeds, so y abeans, gr e en leafy ve g etables s u ch as spin ac h, kale,

beet-tops e t c. The pati e nt should avoid all refin e d foods, fri e d and greasy food, sugar and products made with it, s t rong tea, co f fee, alcoholic beverages, condiments and pickl e s.

 

The patient should avoid over eating and take f r equent small meals rather than a f e w large ones. He s h ould not eat large meals before going to bed.

 

 

 

Tip 180. Foods for Colitis

 

Diet plays an important part in the t r eatment of colitis. I t is a d visable to o bserve a juice fast for five days or so in most cases of ulc e rative colitis. The juic e s may be diluted with a little boiled water. Papaya juice, raw cabbage a n d carrot juices will be especially be n eficial. Citr u s juic e s should be av oided. The bowel should be cleansed daily with a warm wa t er enema.

After the juice fast, the p atient should gradually adopt a diet of small, fr e quent meals of soft cooked or s t eamed veg e tables, rice, dalia (coarsely broken wheat), well ripened frui t s like banana and papaya, yo g hurt and home-made c o ttage cheese. Sprouted seeds and g rains,

whole meal bread and raw vegetables may be a dded g r adually to this diet after ab o ut 10 days. All food must be eaten slowly and chewed thoroughly.

 

Foods which should be excluded from the diet are white su g ar, white bread and white flour products, highly seaso n ed foods, highly salted f oods, strong tea, coffee and alcoholic beverages and foods c o oked in al um inium pa n s.

 

Ripe bananas are highly beneficial in the treatment of ulcer a tive colitis, b eing bland, smooth, easily diges t ed and slig h tly laxative. They relieve acute symptoms and promote the healing process.

 

An effective remedy for ulcerative colitis is the u s e of butter- milk. It is t h e residual milk left a fter the fat has b een remov e d from yog h urt by churning. Buttermilk enema twice a week is also soothing a n d helps in r e -installing a healthy flora in the colo n .

 

Another valuable remedy for colitis is tender coconut water, it is soot h ing to the soft mucosa of the colon. C ooked apple also ai d s t h e healing of ulcerative conditions b e cause of i t s ample concentrati o n of iron and phosphoro u s.
