Tip 177. Food Cures for Cataracts

 

There is inc r easing evi d ence to sh o w that in several cases cataracts have actually b een reversed by proper nutri t ional treatment. Howev e r, the time needed for s u ch treatment may extend from six months to three years.

 

A thorough course of c l eansing the system of the toxic matter is ess e nt i al. To start with, it will

be benefici a l to undergo a fast for th r ee to four d ays on orange juice and water. A w a rm water


enema m a y be taken du r ing this pe r iod. After this initi a l fast, a diet of very restricted nature should be f o llowed for two weeks. In this regimen, breakfast may consist of oranges o r grapes

or any other juicy fruit in season. R a w vegetab l e salads in s e ason, with olive oil and l e mon

juice dressi n g, and soaked raisins, figs or da t es should be t a ken during lunch. Evening meals may consist of vegetable such as sp i nach, fenug r eek, drum sticks, cabba g e, caulif l ower,

carrot, turnips, steamed in their own juices, and a few nuts or some fruits, such as a p ples, pears and g rapes.

 

Potatoes s h ould not be t aken. No bread or any other food s h ould be ad d ed to this diet. After two weeks on this diet, t he cataract patient may start on a fuller diet on t h e following lines:

 

* Breakfast: Any fresh fruits in seas o n, except bananas.

* Lunch: A large mixed raw vegetable salad with wholemeal bread or c h apattis and butter.

* Dinner: Two or three s t eamed veg e tables, other than potat o es, with nuts and fresh f r uit.

 

The short f a st followed b y a restrict e d diet should be repeated after three months of the commenc e ment of the treatment and again thr e e months later, if necessary. The bowels should be cleansed daily with a warm water en e ma during the fast, and a fterwards as necessary.

 

The patient should avoid white bread, sugar, cr e am, refined cereals, ric e , boiled pot a toes, puddings a n d pies, stro n g tea or cof f ee, alcoholic beverages, condiments, pickl e s , sa u c es or other so-called aids to digestion.

 

 

 

Tip 178. Food Cures for D y sentery

 

Among specific food re m edies, bael f ruit is, perh a ps, the most efficacious in the treatment of dysentery of both the varieties. Pulp of the fruit mixed with jaggery should be given thrice daily.

To deal with a chronic case of dysentery, unripe bael fruit is roasted over the fire and the pulp

is mixed with water. Large quantiti e s of the inf u sion so ma d e should be administered with jaggery. The pulp of the unripe fruit mixed with a n equal qu a ntity of dried ginger can also be given with butter milk.

 

The use of p omegranate rind is ano t her effecti v e remedy for dysentery. About 60 grams

should be b oiled in 250 grams of milk. It should be removed from the fire when one third of the milk has evaporated. It should be a d ministered to the patient in three eq u al doses at suitable intervals. It will relieve t he disease very soon.

 

Lemon juice is very effective in dealing with ordinary cases of dysentery. A few lem o ns, peels and slice d , should be a d ded to 250 ml of water and boiled f or a few minutes. The st r ained infusion sh o uld be administered thrice daily.
