Tip 130. Diet thera p y f o r liver disease.

The simple f orm of jaundice can be cured rapidly by diet therapy and exercises. Rec o very will, however, be slow in serious cas e s which have been caused by obstruction or press u re in the

bile duc t s . T he patient should rest u ntil the acu t e symptoms of the dise a s e subside.

The patient should be p ut on a fruit juice fast for a week. The juice of lemon, grapes, pear,

carrot, beet, and sugarcane can be t aken. A hot enema should be taken daily during the fast to ensure regular bowel elimination, thereby prev e nting the a b sorption of d ecomposed, poisonous material into the blood s t ream. The fruit juice fast may be discontinued af t er the severity of the disease is ov er and a simple diet may be resumed on the following lines:

* On rising: A glass of w arm water mixed with two teaspoons of lime juic e .

* Breakfast: One fresh juicy fruit such as apple, p apaya, grapes, berries a nd mangoes . One cup wheat dalia or one slice of whole wheat bread with a little butter.

All fats like ghee, butte r , cream and oils must be avoided for at least two weeks, and after that their cons u mption should be kept d own to the minim u m. Digestive dist u rbances must be avoided. No food with a tendency to ferment or putrefy in the lower intestines like pulses, legumes, etc., should b e included in the diet.

Tip 131. Balanced diet for restori n g restful sleep.

A balanced diet with simple modific a tions in the eating patte r n will go a l o ng way in the

treatment and cure of i n somnia. Such a diet sh o uld exclude white flour p roducts, su g ar and its products, t e a, coffee, c h ocolate, c o la drinks, a lcohol, fatty foods, fried f o ods, foods containing additives, t h at is chemicals for pres e rving, colouring and flavouring, excessive use of salt and strong condiments.

In the modified eating p a ttern, break f ast should consist of fr e s h and dried fruits, whole cereals, seeds and yoghurt. Of the two main meals, one should co n s ist of a large mixed salad and the other should be protein - based. A c u p of milk sweetened with honey at bedtime is h e lpful as the amino acid t ryptophan contained in milk induces sleep.
