Tip 79. What y ou need to kn o w be f ore y ou st a rt a diet, especial l y a raw juice d i et.

Give care before starti n g a raw juice diet.

Certain precautions are necessary in adopting a n exclusive diet of raw juices. Fi r s tly,

all juices s h ould be made fresh immediately before drinking. Canned and frozen juices should

not be used. It will be a d visable that one should have one's own juicer f or extracting fresh juices.

Secondly, only fresh ripe fruits and vegetables, preferably organically g r own, should be used for extraction of juic e s .

Thirdly, only as much juice as need e d for immed i ate consumption should be

extracted. Raw juices oxidise rapi d ly and lose th e ir medicinal value in sto r age, even under refrigeratio n .

Fourthly, the quality of the juices has a distinct b e aring on the results obt ai ned. In

case of i n c o mplete extr a c tion of j u ic e s , their effective power is proportion a tely reduced due to the absence of the vitamins and enzymes which are left behind in fibre a nd the pulp.

Finally, if juices are too sweet they should be diluted in water on 50: 50 basis or mixed with other less sweet juices. This is e sp e cially important in some specific co n ditions such as diabetes, hypoglycaemia, arthritis a nd high blo o d pressure.

Like vegetables, frui t s a re an excellent source o f minerals, vitamins and enzymes. They are easily diges t ed and exercise a clea n sing effect o n the blood and digesti v e tract. They contain high alkaline properties, a high perc e ntage of water and a low percentage of proteins a nd fats. Their organic acid and h igh sugar c o ntent have immediate r e freshing eff e cts.

Apart from seasonable f r esh fruits, d r y fruits, such as raisi n s, prunes and figs are also

beneficial. F ruits are at t heir best w h en eaten in t he raw and ripe states. I n cooking, t he loose portions of t he nutrient salts and ca r bohydrates. They are most beneficial when taken as a separate meal by themselves, preferably for brea k fast in the morning. If it becomes necessary

to take fruits with regular food, they should form a larger pro p ortion of the meals. Fruits, however, make better combination with milk than with meals. It is also d esirable to t ake one kind of fruit at a time. For the maintenance of g o od health, at least one p ound of uncooked

fruits sho u ld form part of the daily d i et. In case o f sickn e ss, it will be advisable to take fruits in the form of juices.
